Story Behind The Scarf

The Hermes Etriers scarf is a celebrated and highly recognizable design that draws inspiration from the passion for equestrianism and collecting of Emile Hermès, grandson of the founder Thierry Hermès.

Emile Hermès was an avid collector who amassed a large and diverse collection of objects, with a focus on horses and travel. He believed that the history and usage of an object were as important as its aesthetic beauty. This collection served as a rich source of inspiration for the design of the "Etriers" scarf.

The scarf specifically showcases sixteen different types of stirrups from various origins, such as France, the Middle East, and South America, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These stirrups reflect the artistry and craftsmanship of artisans from around the world.

The design highlights the importance of equestrian equipment throughout history, including a prominent Peruvian pyramid-shaped stirrup and a sidesaddle stirrup used by women, sometimes referred to as the "Sandal of the Amazon." The variety of stirrups, including French and Hungarian styles, showcase both comfort and functionality in different riding contexts.
