Story Behind The Scarf
The Hermès En Attendant Ulysse scarf tells the story of Penelope, wife of Odysseus, from Homer's Odyssey. The design, created by Florence Manlik, draws inspiration from Eastern European folklore and traditional costumes. Penelope, in her long wait for Odysseus's return from the Trojan War, cleverly staved off her suitors by promising to marry one after she finished weaving a tapestry. She would weave during the day and unravel her work at night, thus never completing the task. The scarf's imagery, including the tapestry and the figure of Penelope, reflects this clever ruse.
